Store your batteries and accumulators safely
with solutions from BITO

Lithium-ion batteries are considered hazardous goods and are subject to strict legal requirements during storage and transport.
The German and global battery and accumulator market is developing rapidly, as the market is expanding enormously and the areas of application for batteries and accumulators are constantly growing. Not only are more and more mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, razors, power tools and other devices being powered by rechargeable batteries, but electromobility and the expansion of renewable energies (i.e. the energy transition) are also increasing the demand for lithium-ion batteries. The market trend for lead batteries also remains positive. They are particularly needed for the secure power supply of hospitals, data centres and also for electric vehicles.
According to the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI e. V.), the market development for primary batteries, which are used in hearing aids, sensors, pacemakers and other devices, for example, shows an almost 80 per cent increase in production in 2020. Non-rechargeable primary batteries and rechargeable batteries have been standardised in terms of size.
Of course, batteries and rechargeable batteries must also be stored and transported properly. Lithium-ion batteries, especially those with a high capacity, can overheat and catch fire, for example. They are considered hazardous goods and are subject to strict legal requirements during storage and transport. Special fireproof hazardous goods containers must therefore be used for lithium-ion batteries, especially those with a large capacity. During storage, special hazard classes, spacings and storage heights, storage temperatures and fire protection precautions must be observed.
BITO Solutions meet the legal requirements for safe battery storage
BITO has developed solutions for the following applications:

Fire protection
Extinguishing agents and sprinkler systems must precisely match the type of battery used.
- Storage areas must be partitioned off to make it more difficult for a fire to spread.
- Avoid highly flammable packaging.
- Choose fire-safe lighting.
- Install an automatic extinguishing system for fire containment.
The BITO solution: In-rack sprinkler system
As a manufacturer of pallet racking, we have more than 30 years of experience in the field of sprinkler systems.
- We coordinate with sprinkler suppliers at an early stage to ensure that the most efficient system is installed.
- When developing customised solutions, we take into account fire protection requirements such as smoke extraction and containment systems for the storage of hazardous substances.

Appropriate storage conditions and safe storage location
Storing different types of batteries in a warehouse is challenging. The following points must be observed, among others:
- Take storage height and storage volume into account.
- Maintain a clear spacing between shelving and racking runs.
- Protect batteries from impacts.
- Observe the admissible stacking height of battery cartons (see manufacturer's instructions).
The BITO solution: BITO Pallet racking
complete with the right equipment for battery and accumulator storage:
- Level decking wiht grating
- Sump trays
- Fire protection barriers
- Shielding panels
- Heat protection panels
- In-rack sprinkler system

Compliance with temperature and humidity specifications
Points to be observed:
- Ambient conditions must be consistently cool and dry (approx. 15 °C, see manufacturer's instructions).
- The area must be well ventilated.
- No direct exposure to sunlight.
The BITO solution: Heat protection panels
Our heat protection panels are produced on state-of-the-art machinery.
- The panels have been designed in accordance with VDS CEA 4001 specifications.
- Material thickness 0.7 mm (galvanised steel sheet).
- No gap between heat protection panels in double deep racking.
Individual requirements for safe battery storage
There are currently no regulations from legislation, but there are still many challenges to consider.
Batteries and accumulators cannot be stored like other products; there are many other aspects which must be observed in order to exclude and prevent hazards. Get expert advice!

Safe battery storage and handling
with solutions from BITO

E-Mobility
E-mobility has created a whole new industry with new challenges. It has an impact on all our means of transport, from cars, bicycles and scooters to buses and lorries.

Digital Devices
Every household has several digital appliances and the industry is still booming. The battery technology used in household appliances is evolving rapidly, which is why proper storage of batteries and equipment is so important.

Craft sector
Battery-powered machines are indispensable in the skilled trades and the construction industry. The variety of equipment mirrors the variety of batteries. However, this also makes storing the different batteries all the more difficult. BITO offers the optimum solution to meet these challenges.

Energy generation
Large storage heaters have special batteries that need to be stored separately. In order to fulfil the requirements, suitable storage equipment is essential.
